Business leaders Noel Quinn, formerly CEO of HSBC, and Warren East, who led Rolls-Royce, are among those knighted in the King’s New Year Honours List.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of Network Rail; Edward Braham, chairman of M&G, and Andy Street, recently mayor of the West Midlands and former head of John Lewis are also knighted. In Scotland, Sandy Adam, chairman of Scottish housebuilder Springfield Properties, received an OBE.

Campaigners who fought for justice over the Post Office IT scandal were awarded OBEs. They included Josephine Hamilton, Christopher Head, Lee Castleton, Dr Kay Linnell, Seema Misra and Richard Gresham Haley who campaigned for the subpostmasters, and journalist Rebecca Thomson, who broke the Horizon story in 2009 while working for Computer Weekly.

This year’s roll-call includes knighthoods for the actor, writer and charity worker Stephen Fry, ex-England football manager Gareth Southgate, the mayor of London Sadiq Khan; Ken McCallum, director general of MI5, and the celebrity chef Loyd Grossman.

Artist, colourist and master printmaker Barbara Davis Rae becomes a Dame Commander for services to art along with Labour MP and former shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry.

Author Jacqueline Wilson, who created the Tracy Beaker series, has been made a Dame Grand Cross (GBE) for services to literature.

CBEs are awarded to the gardener and television presenter Alan Titchmarsh; John Flint, CEO of the UK Infrastructure Bank; Donald Robert, chairman of the London Stock Exchange; the actors Carey Mulligan, Sarah Lancashire and Anne Reid; Christopher Stark, chief executive of the Climate Change Committee; and Richard Williams, vice-chancellor and principal of Heriot Watt University.

Others named CBE are Scottish technology leader Gillian Docherty; Ross Haggart, retired chief officer at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service; Michelle Macleod for services to criminal justice and law enforcement; Laura McIver formerly chief pharmacist at Healthcare Improvement Scotland; and Professor Alex McMahon, retired chief nursing officer for Scotland.

OBEs are given to former West Ham United, Manchester United and Everton football manager David Moyes; Miles Celic, chief executive of TheCityUK; Louise Smith, chair, Innovate Finance; Robert Purvis, director of Kinross-based Purvis Plant Hire; Duncan Scott, the Scottish Olympic swimmer; Olympic cyclist Tom Pidcock; former F1 driver and broadcaster Martin Brundle, and actors Anne-Marie Duff and Kevin Whately.

Former Doctor Who actor Tom Baker receives the MBE along with the athletes Keely Hodgkinson, who adds to her Sports Personality of the Year award, Dina Asher-Smith and Sammi Kinghorn; fellow Olympians Emma Finucane and Katarina Johnson-Thompson; as well as former Scotland footballer and broadcaster Alan Hansen.

There are also MBEs for Scottish broadcaster Jackie Bird; Ian Stevenson, CEO at Cyacomb; cyclists Finlay Graham and Jenny Holl; archer Nathan MacQueen; swimmer Stephen Clegg and boccia player Stephen McGuire; David Rickman from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club; Bill Lumsden, director of distilling at Glenmorangie; Jennifer Craw, co-founder and chief executive of economic development catalyst Opportunity North East; and Graeme Dunnett, head of reactors at Dounreay. Retired solicitor Gordon Hay receives the same honour for the promotion of the Doric language.

The oldest person on the list is 103-year-old World War Two Mosquito pilot Colin Bell, who is given a British Empire Medal (BEM) for charitable fundraising and public speaking.

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney said: “The King’s New Year Honours List recognises exceptional individuals – from unsung heroes to well-known names. Each recipient is worthy of their award and has made a significant difference to their community or excelled in their field.

“My congratulations to our emergency services members awarded The King’s Fire, Police or Ambulance Service Medals.

“Throughout Scotland people benefit from the skills and expertise of our ‘blue light’ services personnel whose skills and expertise keep our communities and people safe, in often challenging circumstances.

“These honours celebrate the best of Scotland’s courageous spirit and sense of community. Congratulations and my personal thanks to every worthy recipient.”
